IHG One Rewards covers more than 6,000 hotels across 19 brands — Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Crowne Plaza, Kimpton, Hotel Indigo, InterContinental, Regent, Six Senses, voco, and others. It is one of the largest hotel loyalty programs in the world. After the 2022 shift to dynamic award pricing, the program's value is no longer in a published chart — it's in two specific credit card benefits and a handful of consistent redemption sweet spots.

How you earn

Base members earn 10 points per US dollar at most IHG brands (Staybridge and Candlewood earn 5 per dollar). Elite status multipliers layer on top: 10% for Silver, 20% for Gold, 60% for Platinum, 100% for Diamond. In addition, the co-branded Chase cards, IHG's dining program, and periodic promotions add earning paths that can overshadow stay-based accrual.

For most US members, the fastest way to accumulate points is a combination of Chase IHG Premier welcome bonus + 4 points per dollar on the card at IHG properties + IHG's regular promotions (which frequently run "earn triple points on your next two stays" style offers).

How you redeem

IHG moved to fully dynamic award pricing in November 2022. The old category chart is gone. Today, award pricing floats with cash rates, with wide peak/off-peak variation. The same Holiday Inn that might cost 15,000 points on a slow Tuesday could cost 35,000 points on a Saturday in a busy season.

Two benefits replaced the lost chart value:

  • Annual 40,000-point Reward Night certificate from the IHG Premier (Chase). Useable at any IHG property pricing at or below 40,000 points per night on your selected date.
  • 4th Night Free on award stays for Premier cardholders. Book four or more award nights and the fourth (and subsequent fourth nights in additional 4-night blocks) is free.

Stack both. A 5-night stay at a Kimpton that prices 35k/night costs: 35k × 5 = 175k. Apply 4th Night Free: 35k × 4 = 140k. If you also use the 40k certificate for one night: 35k × 3 + 40k cert + 1 free night = 145k effective (certificate covers 35k). Cost approximately 105k points plus one certificate — for a stay with 5 × $250 cash rate, a reasonable redemption.

Elite status

TierQualificationSignature benefits
Silver10 nights or 20k qualifying points10% earning bonus, priority check-in
Gold20 nights or 40k qualifying points20% earning bonus, complimentary internet upgrade
Platinum40 nights or 60k qualifying points60% earning bonus, welcome amenity, upgrades (space-available)
Diamond70 nights or 120k qualifying points100% bonus, guaranteed 4pm checkout, 4 suite-upgrade certificates, welcome amenity choice

Diamond is the top tier and generally the threshold where IHG benefits become meaningful. Reaching 70 nights requires real travel volume or significant credit-card spend (the Premier card earns 10+ points per dollar effectively at IHG, and qualifying points thresholds translate some card-spend points into status credit).

The Chase card shortcut

The IHG One Rewards Premier card automatically grants Platinum status for as long as the card is open. For travelers who don't put 40+ nights per year into IHG, Platinum-via-card captures most of the useful elite benefits (upgrades, welcome amenity, 60% bonus) without requiring extensive stays.

The program's biggest strengths

  • Mid-tier footprint. Holiday Inn Express and Holiday Inn dominate US interstate travel. When your trip is road-trip or rural, IHG has a property where other chains don't.
  • 4th Night Free. A genuine, persistent benefit that compounds on longer stays.
  • Reward Night certificate. The annual 40k cert is consistently useful. At any property pricing 40k, the certificate matches the full cost — redemptions unlocked that would otherwise cost points outright.
  • Diamond benefits delivery. When Diamond status is held, late checkout and welcome amenities are consistently honored.

The program's weaknesses

  • Dynamic pricing ceiling. At aspirational properties — Regent, Six Senses, Kimpton at peak — point pricing can exceed 100k per night. Point value at these rates drops below the program's average.
  • Elite breakfast inconsistency. Unlike Marriott Platinum or Hilton Diamond, IHG elites don't universally receive free breakfast. Brand-specific. Plan around it.
  • Fewer transferable-points partners. Chase UR transfers to IHG at 1:1, but the transfer value is weak compared to Hyatt. Best to earn IHG points via stays + Premier card spend rather than UR transfers.

Best redemption sweet spots

Dynamic pricing killed the old category chart, but some consistent patterns remain:

  • Holiday Inn Express during weekdays or shoulder seasons — frequently prices at 20-30k points per night against $150+ cash rates.
  • International properties in secondary European cities — Intercontinental Krakow, Warsaw, Budapest often price at 40-50k against $200+ cash rates.
  • Six Senses properties on less-peaked dates — aspirational but unpredictable. The program's most aspirational redemptions when dates align.
  • Regent Phuket Cape Panwa and similar aspirational properties — peak pricing is high but off-peak can clear at 80-100k against $600+ cash rates.

Who IHG is best for

  • US-domestic travelers whose trips are Holiday Inn / Holiday Inn Express heavy.
  • Travelers who want the 4th Night Free benefit for longer aspirational stays (Maldives, Indonesian islands, Phuket).
  • Credit-card-driven elite chasers who want Platinum or Diamond without 40+ qualifying nights per year.
  • Families doing 4+ night vacation stays regularly (the 4th Night Free math compounds materially).

FAQ

Is the IHG Premier card worth keeping long-term?

Yes for most holders who use IHG at least a handful of times per year. The annual 40k Reward Night certificate alone typically exceeds the $99 annual fee value, and the 4th Night Free benefit plus automatic Platinum status compound the case.

Can I transfer Chase UR to IHG?

Yes, 1:1. But it's rarely the best use of UR — Hyatt transfers typically deliver 2-3x the value per UR point compared to IHG. Transfer UR to IHG only for a specific near-term booking where the redemption is above average value AND your IHG balance is short.

How does the 4th Night Free work on award stays?

On any 4+ night award booking, the fourth night is free. On 8+ nights, the fourth AND eighth are free. You book the full stay on IHG's site; the 4th-Night-Free discount applies automatically if the Premier card is on file.

Does IHG have transfer partners other than Chase UR?

Limited. The program pulls most of its card-driven acquisition through the Chase co-brands. No Amex MR direct transfer, no Capital One Miles direct transfer. Chase UR is effectively the only transferable-points path for US members.

What's the best IHG stay type for point value?

Longer stays (4+ nights) at mid-tier properties (Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Crowne Plaza) in high-cash-rate markets or peak dates. The 4th Night Free compounds most effectively at this combination.
